Simple Way to Encourage a Love for Reading

I’m a self-proclaimed bookworm who attributes my zeal for writing (re: blogging) to my passion for reading. I’ve been a lover of books for as long as I can remember. From borrowing stacks of books from our local library to going through my school’s book fair pamphlets, there’s nothing that was more exciting than reading a good book. Even now, I love winding down my chaotic days by getting lost in the latest, can’t put it down even though I should really go to bed, novel. The excitement I [still] feel reading a good page-turner is such a cathartic stress reliever.

Simple Way to Encourage a Love for Reading

I can go on and on about the benefits of reading. But, now as a mom of a soon-to-be independent reader and a new preschooler, it’s a huge part of how I parent and spend time with my kids. One of the greatest wishes I have as the boys start their schooling years, is that they develop a true love for reading and learning. When I was a student, my passion for reading helped me to be successful in other areas of academic life. I truly believe that reading is such a crucial part of early and continuing education for kids.

I’m so happy to partner with Epic! to bring to you a wonderful resource in its leading, award-winning digital library (for kids 12 and under) that contains over 25,000 of the best books, learning videos, quizzes, and more. Epic!’s mission is to nurture a love of reading and learning in kids which is an invaluable part to why I love using it with the boys.

The boys love to pick out their favorite book series like Pete the Cat and Llama Llama. They literally sit for hours listening to their favorite stories, sounding out different words and letters, and watching fun learning videos. I set up a profile for each of them (you get 4 profiles with one subscription!) and they take turns picking out the different books and learning videos that are customized to their interests and favorite topics.

Now that he’s in kindergarten, A is really getting into checking out new subjects like STEM and animals. He also likes learning new things like different techniques of painting and coloring. A LOVES getting a new badge when he hits a new goal or milestone on Epic!. I love the interactive engagement that Epic! provides the boys. It’s really a simple way to encourage a love for reading, especially for elementary aged kids.

Some other things that I really like about the Epic! is that it is used in 87% of US elementary school classrooms, including A’s school. Using this resource home helps us to reiterate lessons and books that he studies while at school. For only $7.99 a month, we get unlimited access to its thousands of popular titles and series. It’s an essential school resource that we use almost on a daily basis.

One of the best parts is reading different types of books with the boys. library covers many different subjects and topics, from nonfiction to fiction and everything in between! It makes me so giddy to think about all of the great adventures and lessons that A (+ C) will learn through their growing love for reading.
