How to Stay Active with Kids: Tips from a Dad of Three

Now that the warm weather is finally making an appearance around here, the boys in this house are fully enjoying the fresh air and activity outdoors. Being a dad of three boys keeps my husband on his toes on a daily basis. But, that doesn’t always mean that he gets regular exercise. These days of raising tiny babes, he’s always looking for simple and easy ways to keep up a regular workout routine. Here are a few tips for how to stay active with kids:

Wrestling

Happy hour in this house consists of lots of wrestling and play time. Most nights, I’m getting dinner ready while my husband is on wrestling duty. The boys love to climb on and all over their dad. I love this time of listening to their wrestling matches and hearing the joyous sounds of laughter. While it’s a play time favorite for the boys, it also serves as a quick little cardio and weight-lifting session for my husband. No joke, have you tried wrangling or lifting an almost 3-year-old and 5-year-old at the same time? Yeah, it’s definitely a workout! Couple that with wearing the baby half the time, it’s a simple and easy way to stay active during the work week.

Bike Rides & Walks

Bike rides around the neighborhood are a great way for the kids to shake out their energy. It’s also a great for way for everyone to get some fresh air and light cardio exercise. D loves to wear Baby B in the Ergobaby Omni Cool Air Mesh baby carrier. It’s a great carrier, especially for the warmer months, because it has a breathable 3D air mesh panel to keep the baby cool. D loves that the Omni 360 Cool Air Mesh baby carrier has all of the features of his go-to carrier, the Ergobaby Omni 360, like the lumbar support and padded crossable straps for long wearing comfort for all carry positions (front facing you, front facing out, hip and back).

Yoga Sessions

Another fun way to stay active with kids is to practice yoga. Whether indoors or outdoors, there’s so many different yoga positions that are easy for the kids and baby wearing dads to do together! All the boys can partake in our yoga sessions and I love that it’s another way for Baby B to get in some quality bonding and skin to skin time with his dad.

Practicing Sports in the Backyard

Soccer and tee ball practice sessions in the backyard are a great way for the boys to spend time exercising together. Baby B is in the Ergobaby carrier, which supports a hip-healthy “M” shape position for his comfort and ergonomics. He LOVES being able to be a part of all the activity with his big brothers.

Childcare at the Gym

If all else fails, we recently enrolled in a gym that offers childcare. We try to go a few times a week, but we’re slowly easing back to making this a regular routine. The boys love playing at the child center and we all go swimming as a family sometimes, too. When you’ve got three little boys, a gym membership with childcare is worth its weight in gold (and then some!)

What are some ways you stay active with young kids?
