In just a couple of weeks, Baby B will be six months old. Half a year has already passed since he was born. Give me a minute to let that sink in a little bit. WOOSAH, holding back the mama tears. Similarly to his older brothers, B started showing signs of interest and readiness for solids last month. I’ve been putting it off for as long as possible because I’m just not ready for him to transition to solids yet! (And I’m definitely not ready for the solids poops either, haha.) But, here we are and I am at least happy that I have my Baby Bullet to make the baby food making process simpler and easier.
Sweet potatoes are the first food each of my boys had around the 5.5 month mark. We’re taking it day by day, offering Baby B a spoonful here and there to see if he wants to try it. I’m taking it slower this time for my own way of holding onto the littleness of my growing babe. Some days he stares us down during meal times, other days he wants nothing but mama’s milk. And I’m totally okay with that for now. As long as some days seem, these days are just flying by all too quickly. I want to savor all of the milestones as much as I can this last time around.
I absolutely love my Baby Bullet. All it takes to cook raw sweet potatoes is one cup of water and a few minutes in the Baby Bullet Steamer. I love how simple it is to use and how fast it makes the baby food preparation. I’m glad that I’m able to cook fresh foods for him, even though most days he gets the short of end of the stick being the third baby of the family!
With all three boys, we’ve taken a mix of the purees / BLW approach. It’s helped us ease into solids, while still giving them a chance to learn how to feed themselves. Because of our mixed approach to infant feeding, the three best foods for baby’s first solids are sweet potatoes, bananas and avocados. I like that they’re easy to turn into a puree using my Baby Bullet system. The steamer is so quick and easy to use to cook the sweet potatoes. The mixer makes the pureeing process so quick and easy. I also like that each of the best foods for baby’s first solids are easily mashed and that I can cut them up into tiny pieces to help with Baby B learning his pincer grasp as he grows bigger and older.
For purees, we typically use the mixer to make a chunkier style to help the baby get used to different textures. For BLW, I like the small cube style and sometimes cut up the avocado and sweet potato into long pieces like french fries as well. All three foods are soft enough that I feel comfortable encouraging him to eat and grind on the smaller pieces with his gums.
Sweet Potatoes are a great source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), vitamin C, manganese, copper, pantothenic acid and vitamin B6. Additionally, they are also a good source of potassium, dietary fiber, niacin, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and phosphorus.
Bananas are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Potassium and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin B6. It’s definitely a household favorite even now with my toddler and preschooler.
Avocados are a good source of pantothenic acid, dietary fiber, vitamin K, copper, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Although they are fruits, they are a great source of healthy fats. I mean, who doesn’t like guac, am I right?
In my opinion sweet potatoes, bananas and avocados are the best foods for baby’s first solids. They’re great to prepare both as a puree or cut up solids to encourage baby led weaning. And all three foods have so many nutritious benefits. As we ease Baby B into more solids, I’ll definitely be rotating these three foods the first couple of months. I’m already looking forward to the baby food making process thanks to my trusty Baby Bullet.
