(re)building my wardrobe: back to basics

In the last few months, I’ve developed a (healthy) habit of purging old clothes and shoes and slowly rebuilding my wardrobe. After coming out of the mom fog of raising two littles, I realized that I’d been holding onto clothes from our dating years! (We’ve been together 10 years this summer).

Quality and classic pieces aside, I decided to start donating items that have been taking up space in my closet. Those pieces that we all tell ourselves to hold onto “just in case,” inevitably faced my “keep it or lose it” judgment party a la Carrie Bradshaw. I’ve held strong and donated many a bags full of clothes to our local Salvation Army.

I’m determined to invest in myself a little bit and catch up to the styles of the modern mom. But, instead of buying a bunch of new things, I’m trying to be mindful and intentional about my purchases. D appreciates that I’m not binge shopping every few days and I’m happy with the items I’ve chosen thus far. So from time to time, I’ll try to update here on my latest fashion finds.

Some happy mail from a recent purchase arrived earlier this week. So here’s my inaugural project rebuild my wardrobe post:

jeans: J Brand Midrise Super Skinny – Frosbite (old, linked to similar)
Like most moms, the number one quality I look for is comfort! But who says you can’t be comfortable and stylish? I was eye-shopping on Nordstrom online when these peep-toe sandal booties caught my eye! Perfect for summer and super comfortable! And oh my gosh, my first non-flats purchase in forever! D is pleased with my adding heels back into my collection of every day footwear.

I bought the tee in pretty much every available color based on some reviews from friends. And I’m sold! While they don’t cover my butt entirely like a tunic tee, the cotton is lightweight and soft, perfect for every day wear. I needed basic tees in basic colors, what better way to (re)build my wardrobe, right? I think these will definitely be a staple item in my closet.

The jeans are a few years old, but they’re one of my favorite pairs of summer jeans. The color is white with a tint of the faintest blue. These days I prefer high-rise jeans, but these mid-rise jeans are super comfortable and I tend to fall back on them especially during the few warm months we have here in Michigan.

What are some of your basics? Any suggestions on what to add next as I rebuild my wardrobe? Have you done a closet rehaul before? Any tips for a newbie?

  1. When I'm not pregnant (which seems like a lifetime ago) I ALWAYS had a variety of v-necks in al different colors. Target was my go-to for those. And when it's winter I'm all about boots…they can change the look of any outfit in a flash!

  5. Love those shoes, girl!! I'm terrible about building up wardrobe. I have clothes from high school and college that I still wear and I'm nearly 30! With that said, I love the simplicity of jeans and a t-shirt and with those shoes, it totally rounds it out!

I do love the basics!!! I have myself to buy them because I tend to be drawn to patterns which I wear less of in the long run. Great post. You look so pretty too.
